14.FLECHAS DE LOS ANDES GRAN MALBEC

The winery is an alliance between members of two French wine families, Baron Benjamin de Rothchild and Laurent Dassault, which may explain why it is somewhat reminiscent of a Bordeaux wine. It is complex both on the nose and on the palate with many aromas and flavours – creamy dark fruits including black cherries, plums and blueberries plus coffee and hints of liquorice and violets. Subtle smoky spices like pepper and cinammon give a slightly warm feel to the medium-bodied wine and the lovely smooth texture gives it a certain elegance. This wine has a long, long finish.

Recommended to drink with steak, other beef dishes including chilli con carne and other spiced dishes, lamb including tagines, venison, game casseroles, strong flavoured offal, strong cheeses and chocolate.

Robert Parker: 90 Points – “The 2011 Gran Malbec is matured one third in new barriques, one third in used ones, and the rest in stainless steel for one year. This is a big wine, as Syrah should be, but not so big that it floors you. Rich and oaky, it’s full of juicy black fruits, spice and a touch of liquorice (in sweet form, I can’t stand liquorice. But in wine, when done well, I can cope). Made by one of Chile’s biggest producers from grapes grown in the Maipo region, this shows their best side. If you’ve got sausages on the table, open this.

A lively red color is the first clue that the wine before us is very fresh. Its aromatic potency is very well harmonized with its complexity. Eight months in contact with French oak lend it a certain degree of seriousness, along with a bit of vanilla, smoke, cigar box, and sweet spices. Good balance on the palate with properly rounded tannins that enable this Cabernet Sauvignon to linger long on the palate.

Highly recommended with braised beef with French fries, steak and eggs, paella, cannelloni, and lasagna.

Wine Spectator – “There’s minerally freshness to the ripe dark plum, blackberry and cherry flavors, with peppery hints. Well-structured and crisp midpalate, featuring Asian spice and black fig notes on the finish. Drink now through 2020.”

The late ripening of the grapes have made it possible to express the crispness and freshness of the fruit to best effect. What is striking is the high quality of the tannins on the palate: silky, refined and without any sharp edges, albeit with a lower density than in hotter vintages. After fermentation, it matured in barrel and oak vats for four months. This wine showcases the power and concentration of 2019, an extraordinarily warm and dry year, but the wine has great finesse. This is the most modern and international of their wines, with a showy profile. A triumph over the conditions of the vintage. 237,000 bottles produced.

74.GEVREY CHAMBERTIN, LATOUR

Situated about 10 Km from Dijon, Gevrey-Chambertin is one of the finest viticultural villages of the Côte de Nuits. In 1847 Gevrey-Chambertin was the first village of the Côte d’Or to join the village name with that of one of its Grand Crus – hence ‘Gevrey-en-Montagne’ became ‘Gevrey-Chambertin. Planted only with Pinot Noir, here one finds the complete hierarchy of the Burgundian appellations: to the north, the premiers crus and to the south the grand crus. The village appellations are gathered on the bottom of the slope. The sparse and pebbly limestone-rich brown-red soils give Gevrey-Chambertin wines power and body. A great Côte de Nuits classic!

The fruit for our Malbec Ultra was hand-picked into 15kg-trays in April. The process was aimed at preserving the berries, which were selected manually in the winery to ensure removal of any foreign particles capable of affecting final product quality.

This deep brilliant red-colored wine with purplish tones displays rich aromas. The nose has interesting spicy and floral notes —a clear expression of a cool year—intertwined with black fruit aromas reminiscent of blueberries and blackberries that show this variety’s great typicity. Good structure and soft tannins call for a second glass. The finish is fresh, complex, and persistent with fruit notes and subtle spicy undertones of rosemary, thyme, and dry flowers.

83.CHABLIS, DOMAINE LAROCHE

Domaine Laroche is directly linked to the history of Chablis. One of the most respected and largest landholders of Grand Cru vineyard, Domaine Laroche owns 90 hectares of vineyard situated amongst the best crus.

Its headquarters, the Obédiencerie of Chablis, reveals a heritage dating back from the Middle Ages when the Canons of Saint Martin of Tours were making wine. Saint Martin’s relics were hidden in the Obédiencerie for a decade. This exceptional testimony is very much alive: Domaine Laroche still elaborates and ages its Premiers and Grands Crus in these historical cellars. Its wines are a testimony of 1000 years of history!

The Laroche philosophy is based on a very special care of the terroirs in order for each of them to express its own particular characteristics in the glass. The importance of the ecological balance is crucial to maintain the vineyard heritage and to favour its durability. The respect of the soil, of the vine workers and of the environment are Laroche major commitments.

84.MEURSAULT 1ER CRU "PERRIERES", LATOUR

Situated just south of Volnay and Pommard in the Côte de Beaune, Meursault is the most extensive southerly white wine commune of the Côte-d’Or. Surprisingly enough for an appellation of this quality, no Grand Cru exists, however the high quality of the 1er Cru more then compensates for this. The vineyard of Meursault « Perrières » tends to show a soil that is thinner and stonier than many of its immediate neighbours, producing what is arguably one of the finest example of the wine from this village.

This 1er Cru offers a complex and floral nose with grilled almond hints. The mouth is round with acacia honey and yellow peach notes. The oaky is ample lingering into a beautiful persistence.

The Billecart family has been living in Mareuil-sur-Ay since the 16th century. When Nicolas Francois Billecart married Elisabeth Salmon in the early 1800s the two families’ long held vineyards were married as well. This led to Nicolas’ decision to leave his law practice and take over the family wine estate. In 1818 he founded the house of Billecart-Salmon which now stands as the oldest continuously family owned and operated house in Champagne.

Appearance: Its pale and bright pink colour is adorned with warm glints of gold and its delicate slowly rising bubbles give it a persistent mousse. Aroma: This cuvée unveils a subtle aroma leading to an elegant, delicate bouquet of fine notes of red fruits and zest of citrus fruits. Palate: Its special method of vinification gives this cuvée a light, elegant flavour, followed by a fresh finish with a taste of raspberry.
